Decking lights are outdoor lights specifically designed to be installed in a deck, so you can make the most of your garden, even once the sun has set.
The most popular type of decking lights are recessed spotlights, which can be embedded into the floor or steps of your decking. These unobtrusive lights offer a soft illumination, to create ambience, without getting in the way.
Decking lights can allow you to extend your time outside, and can also act as an extra security feature. They make your decking safer, and more inviting to use after dark. You can choose white or coloured lights, depending on the look you want to achieve.
To help you choose the best decking lights for your garden, we’ve put together this list of what we think are 5 of the best options on the market.

This is based on their quality, brightness, and colour and mode options. Now your summer parties never have to end.
These customisable decking lights come with multiple colour and mode options – perfect for parties
Turn your decking from drab to fab with our favourite decking lights. These LED lights from Coysie come in a set of 10, and are a small 30mm in diameter, to fit seamlessly into your decking (each light requires a 22mm cut-out).
The lights are RGB colour-changing, with 20 colour options, and there are 3 modes – static, strobe and fade – so you can have them fixed on your favourite shade, or cycling through. Previous settings are remembered when the lights are unplugged, for your convenience.
Use the handy included remote control to quickly and easily change the colour or mode. The RF remote can be operated from a distance of 15-20m, so you can alter the lights from your doorway, or the other side of your garden. It doesn’t rely on having a direct line of sight, so you can keep cables and the control box tucked out of view.
The lights are water-resistant to IP65, and have a power consumption of 2.2W per set. They’ll need to be plugged into a UK AC socket for power, and bear in mind that the adaptor is larger than a standard plug, and may not fit in all external waterproof sockets.
Ultimately, if you want stylish illumination that’s fully customisable and easy to install, we think these are the best decking lights for the job.

If you prefer a warm white to a cool white, you might favour these 16pc LED Plinth Decking Lights by Somoky.
The light emitted from these is more golden and offers a more subtle look. Each light has a power consumption of 0.6W, and as there are fewer lights in this set than the previous option, the overall power required will be significantly lower.

These LED decking lights feature a large diameter and multiple colour modes, to add a bold look to your garden
Our final decking lights are these Waterproof Garden Lights from YZGWZLD. Along with our top pick, these are the only other RGB coloured lights to make it into our selection.
This is another pack of 10 lights, so there aren’t as many as in the sets of white lights – however, in exchange for fewer lights, you get much more control over the colour and look of your lights. You can choose to alter the brightness of the lights, and the speed at which they change shade.
There are a total of 7 colour modes, that can be cycled through by using the remote control, so you don’t need to get up when you want to change the mood. At 45mm in diameter, and with a 30.5mm bulb, these are the largest lights on our list, and ideal for creating a bolder look.

How To Fit Decking Lights
As a general rule, to fit the lights shown here into your deck, you first need to decide where you want your lights. Lay the lights out into your desired position, and choose locations for each one in the centre of deck boards, rather than over joists.
When you’re happy with the positioning, mark on the boards where you want them, and drill the holes, using a drill bit of the correct diameter. Usually, a 22-24mm hole is required for a 30mm light.
Once you’ve drilled all your holes, remove the deck boards and make holes in the joists underneath, to pass the cables through. Install the lights by pushing them into the holes in the deck, and add the blanking plug to the last socket.
You can then plug the adaptor into your mains power source. For this, you’ll need an outdoor 13A plug socket, within a few metres of your deck – if you don’t have one, you can get one fitted. Replace all the boards, turn the lights on, and enjoy their cosy ambiance!
Hiding The Lighting Wires
No one wants unsightly wires spoiling the look of their snazzy new decking lights. If you install your lights according to the instructions above, you should be able to conceal the cables beneath your decking. Secure them in place and off the ground by using cable ties on screw mounts.
Wires on end posts of your decking can also be covered using a wood trim. Choose lights with an RF remote that doesn’t rely on a direct line of sight with the control box, to ensure you can still operate your lights remotely, once all the cables and control boxes are concealed.
How To Fix Broken Deck Lights
Before you can fix broken deck lights, you first need to identify the problem. There are a number of reasons why your decking lights might not be working. An animal could have chewed through a wire, or moisture may have got into your LED bulbs, causing them to corrode and stop working.
If you have one or two lights out, it’s worth sourcing replacements from the manufacturer and changing them, to see if this fixes the problem. Otherwise, it’s probably best to consult a qualified electrician, as faulty electrical systems can be dangerous.
