In our increasingly digital age, physical post is on the decline – which makes opening your letter box and finding you’ve received a letter in the mail all the more exciting.
In order to amplify that feeling, you need a secure and stylish letterbox to open – having your post land on your soggy doormat to be chewed by the dog just isn’t as glamorous! – and this is where wall-mounted postboxes come in.
These lockable letterboxes are the perfect way to keep your post secure, until you’re ready to collect it. Nosy neighbours won’t be able to catch a glimpse of the latest issue of ‘I Love Cats’ magazine on your doorstep, and, on a more serious note, would-be thieves won’t be able to see your letters piling up whilst you’re on holiday.

If you think a letterbox would look post-ively fabulous on the exterior of your home, then check out our list of the 5 best wall-mounted letter boxes. We’ve rated them according to style, durability and affordability – so you can get on with the more important task of replying to your pen pals.
Our best letterbox is large, lockable, and can be fully personalised
Cost: Price not available
As far as wall-mounted letter boxes go, they don’t get much better than this Personalised Letter Box from Signs & Numbers. This stylish post box is made from a durable galvanised steel and features an attractive matte black powder-coating.
The biggest draw though is that the box can be customised to include your address details – or any text you want. You can choose the font type and colour from white, grey or gold, and you can even select a motif, from a list of 20 options.
As well as looking great, this unit is highly practical too. The drop-down door offers easy access to your post and is fully lockable to keep away would-be thieves. It includes 2 keys, so you have a spare in case one gets misplaced.
The box measures 34 x 43.5 x 18cm and has a slot for post which measures 34 x 4.5cm – big enough for your A4-sized Christmas cards. All the necessary screws and fixings to attach the box to your wall are included, and it’s easy to install using a drill, screwdriver and spirit level.
Although the customisation feature makes this wall-mounted letterbox more expensive than some, the quality really is outstanding, and it’s perfect for those who want to clearly advertise their address to prevent missed post. It also makes a unique housewarming gift idea!
- Durable – made from powder-coated galvanised steel.
- Can be personalised with address and motif.
- Attractive black design.
- Large capacity.
- Lockable, drop-down door with 2 keys.
- Pricier than competitors and non-personalised options.
Our best value post box is sturdy, black and has a traditional design
If you’re looking for a lower-priced post box and aren’t worried about having your address printed on it, this traditional design from Gardman might tick all the (letter) boxes.
It features a matte black finish and has a scalloped edging running along the curved top. It would make a great choice for lovers of Art Deco or traditional style and offers a way to extend your interior design preferences outside.
The box measures 37 x 36.5cm, so there’s room for plenty of letters. It includes all the necessary screws and fixings for you to mount it on a wall or fence, and it has pre-drilled holes for this purpose. These are a little awkwardly placed, so you’ll probably need someone to help you install it.
There’s a sturdy barrel lock on the door, and it also comes with 2 keys, so you can share them out within the household, or keep one as a spare. It has a transparent panel, so you can see when you have post – although this could be a negative thing when you are away, and you might wish to cover it with an address tag. It’s also not impossible to retrieve post through the flap, so it’s not the most secure design.
Overall though, this letterbox offers excellent style for an extremely reasonable price and is perfect for those who favour a more traditional look.
- Traditional style with attractive scalloped edging.
- Lockable door with 2 keys.
- Transparent panel allows you to see when you have post.
- Highly affordable.
- Not the most secure option.
- A little awkward to install.
This modern letterbox features a curved front and viewing panels
Cost: Price not available
For those who prefer a more modern style, this Tomasa Wall Mounted Postbox with curved front is here to oblige.
It’s made from durable powder-coated steel in an attractive anthracite colour, and the coating makes it resistant to rust and weathering. The box measures 32 x 45 x 10cm, so there’s room for plenty of letters up to A4 size.
It includes the necessary mounting materials, and the manufacturer recommends to place it somewhere sheltered, to protect it from the rain. This is a good idea for all wall-mounted post boxes, even those that claim to be fully weatherproof.
Not so good points are that the sides of the post box feel a little flimsy, and the transparent viewing panels, whilst allowing you to see when you have mail, could also alert would-be house thieves to the fact that you are away when your post starts piling up.
If you have a secure garden, or someone to collect mail when you are on holiday, there’s no reason not to purchase this unit, and enjoy both the practical benefits and the attractive, modern feel it adds to the exterior of your home.
- Made from rust and weather-proof powder-coated steel.
- Lockable door with 2 keys.
- Slim, modern design.
- Practical touches, including plastic address label holder and viewing panels.
- Weak sides could allow the box to be pulled open.
- Transparent viewing panels and large letter opening may pose a security risk.
This simple, elegant post box has a narrow opening to deter thieves
Next up is this Steel Post Box by Sterling. This one is perfect if you’re not after a modern or traditional style, but just a simple design that does the job.
It’s made from durable galvanised steel with a black powder coating, to make it resistant to weathering and corrosion. The only detail is an embossed letter and ‘post’ text on the front of the box – in case your postie isn’t sure what it’s for!
The post box measures 36.2 x 31 x 11.2cm, making it one of the smallest we’ve featured – but it’s still large enough to accommodate A4 letters and magazines. The simple rectangular shape makes it ideal for stacking or grouping together in blocks of flats or student accommodation.
It comes with 2 keys to access the lockable door, and all fixings for mounting it on the wall – although the poorly positioned pre-drilled holes make it a little awkward to install, and you might wish to replace the provided screws with some sturdier options.
Possibly the best thing about this unit is that the letter opening is particularly narrow, and opens outward, making it difficult for potential thieves to remove your post, and also helping to prevent water getting in when it rains.
Ultimately, this is one of the best post boxes for keeping your post secure and deterring thieves and all for a highly reasonable price – which makes it one of the best value letter boxes available.
- Made from durable galvanised steel.
- Resistant to corrosion and weathering.
- Narrow, outward-opening letter flap, to reduce risk of rain damage and postal theft.
- Suitable for stacking in blocks of flats.
- Screws provided are a little weak.
- Can be fiddly to install.
- Lock mechanism can be stiff.
A super-sleek silver mailbox, with a convenient newspaper slot
Our final letterbox is this Wall-Mounted Mail Box from ABN Design. This one is made from stainless steel in a silver finish, giving it a stylish, modern-industrial aesthetic.
At 33.4 x 30.5 x 9.5cm, and with a letter slot of 30 x 3cm, it’s the smallest letterbox on our list. Along with the super-sleek design, this might make it more suited to flats, than large, stately homes. Unfortunately, it is prone to developing rust spots, despite the stainless steel construction.
As with all the designs on our list, the product has a lockable door and includes 2 keys. It also has an outward opening letter flap – although the slightly shorter height means it’s not too difficult to reach in and remove letters.
What makes this post box unique, at least to our selection, is the newspaper slot at the back, which, whilst it isn’t lockable or in any way secure, does offer a convenient option for the storage of larger items such as newspapers and magazines.
Ultimately, if you want a sleek, modern-style post box that deviates from the usual black and can also accommodate your delivery of the Daily Echo, this might be the ideal solution for you.
- Made from stainless steel.
- Attractive modern design and silver colour.
- Lockable door with 2 keys.
- Newspaper slot for larger items.
- Viewing panels allow you to see when you have post.
- Comparatively small size.
- Walls are quite thin.
- Prone to rust spots.
Tips For Keeping Your Post Safe
Here are some of our best tips for keeping your post safe from would-be thieves:
Use a secure letterbox
You can reduce the chances of post being stolen out of your letterbox by choosing a sturdy design with a secure lock. Look for a box with a narrow letter opening, which will make it difficult for thieves to reach in and remove your post.
Check for post regularly
Remember to check your post box daily (ideally soon after your usual delivery time) and remove all letters and packages. This will give potential thieves less time to strike.
Block viewing panels
Many letterboxes come with viewing panels to allow you to see when you have post. The problem is, this can also alert postal thieves to the same. Reduce this risk by covering the windows from the inside with paper or card – especially if you are expecting an important or high-value delivery.
Make alternative delivery arrangements
If you know you’re unlikely to be home for a delivery and it might be left on your doorstep, arrange instead to have parcels sent to a neighbour, or to your work address. When shopping online, you can also often choose to have purchases delivered to a local store or CollectPlus location, so you can collect them at a time convenient to you.
If you’re away from home for an extended period of time, for example on holiday, follow these mail management tips to keep your home secure:
Don’t allow your post to pile up
Post visibly piling up on your doormat or spewing out of letterboxes is a clear sign to house thieves that your home is currently empty. If you’re going away, make arrangements for a trusted friend, neighbour or family member to collect any postal deliveries (and ideally check on your property at the same time).
Use Royal Mail Keepsafe
It is possible to put your postal deliveries from Royal Mail on hold whilst you are away, using their Keepsafe service. This is a paid-for service, and you can apply online, over the phone or by post, up to 5 days before you leave. Be aware that this won’t stop deliveries from other couriers, so you should still ask a friend to check for these.
Stop newspaper deliveries
Daily newspaper deliveries piling up on your doorstep will quickly become obvious to passers-by. Contact your newspaper and ask them to suspend your deliveries until you return (this will save you a few pennies for your trip too!)
