Lonicera periclymenum (Common Honeysuckle)

Common honeysuckle is found in the wild in woodland, scrubland and field margins. It makes an excellent addition to native hedgerows and can also look good covering a pergola or a garden wall or fence.

This woody-stemmed climber looks great twined through shrubs or clambering into trees, thriving in partial or dappled shade. The whitish-cream flowers that bloom in summer are extremely fragrant, with sweet nectar. These are followed by red, non-edible berries.

Our native honeysuckle grows best in moist but well-drained soil conditions. It can be pruned after flowering, though pruning is often kept to a minimum in wilder, wildlife-friendly gardens.
