Crataegus monogyna (Common Hawthorn)

Common Hawthorn matures into a dense branching structure that forms a thick, stock-proof hedge when clipped.

Leaves emerge early in the year, with flowers appearing to signal the outset of summer. The scented white blossom is followed later in the year by red haws.

Hawthorn is easy to care for: it grows across most soil types in part or full sun, tolerating exposed sites and poorer ground. As a native species it also provides shelter and a food source for birds - which makes it extremely valuable for local wildlife.
