Key features

Carpinus betulus (Hornbeam)

Hornbeam is a versatile deciduous tree valued for its dense, rounded canopy and fresh green, finely-serrated leaves. Used as specimen trees or for hedging or boundary planting, in autumn, the foliage turns warm shades of yellow before fading to coppery brown. Leaves often remain on hedges throughout the winter.

When grown as a tree, it can reach 15-25m tall. It can also easily be clipped into formal hedges or maintained at a much smaller size, making it a highly adaptable choice for gardens and landscapes. The smooth grey bark adds further year-round interest.

Hornbeam can thrive in a wide range of soils, including heavier clay. It grows well in full sun or partial shade. Prune regularly to maintain healthy, dense growth if using as a hedge.
