Key features

Hakonechloa macra (Japanese Forest Grass)

Japanese forest grass has bright green foliage, which is tinged red in autumn. It is mound-forming and relatively compact, and it's particularly useful for deep shade areas, where it can be used as groundcover.

Naturally growing below thick forest canopies in Japan, this evergreen grass can work well in deep or partial shade. It can also grow in full sun and with any aspect and exposure. It is unfussy about soil type and pH level.

It is fully hardy, and low-maintenance and is used in a range of garden settings and is often used as edging or underplanting, especially in shady spots.
