Miscanthus sinensis 'Red Chief' is an attractive and tall ornamental grass, which forms panicles of red flowers in summer and autumn that fade to a silvery hue and remain in place well into winter. It thrives in any well-drained soil in full sun.

Miscanthus sin. 'Red Chief' (Eulalia 'Red Chief')

Eulalia 'Red Chief' grows to around 1.5m tall, with a spread of up to around 1m. It has attractive slender flowering spikes with a reddish hue, that fade to silver and remain in place for a long period over the coldest part of the year, adding interest to the winter garden.

Like other ornamental grasses in this genus, this cultivar likes a position in full sun, in a free draining soil that is ideally also reasonably fertile and moist. It is resilient however, and copes well in a range of different types of soil.

The only job to do with this, as with other similar ornamental grasses, is removing dead foliage and spent flowering spikes in spring. This is a hardy plant that does not usually succumb to any pests or diseases.
