Key features

Salvia 'East Friesland' (Balkan Clary 'East Friesland')

Balkan clary variety 'East Friesland' is a reliable choice for late spring to summer blooms. It is valued for its upright spikes of deep purple flowers, which provide a strong burst of colour and can often produce a second flush if trimmed.

Reaching around half a metre in height, or a little less, if forms tidy clumps of aromatic, grey-green foliage. The nectar-rich blooms are particularly attractive to bees and other beneficial insects.

In a well-drained soil in full sun or light, dappled shade, this is a reliable choice which can even tolerate dry conditions once established. Shear back faded stems after the first flush of flowers fade to encourage repeat flowering.
