Key features

Stachys byzantina (Lamb's Ear)

Stachys byzantina, or lamb's ears, is a well-loved perennial which people love for its thick, velvet, silvery grey foliage that provides striking contract and tactile pleasure in sunny planting schemes and sensory gardens. The soft leaves form dense, spreading clumps that are particularly effective at the front of beds of borders.

In early to midsummer, upright spikes of small, pale purple flowers rise about the foliage, adding vertical interest and attracting bees. Mature plants grow around 30-45cm tall when in flower.

Thriving in dry conditions once established, this plant is well suited to a spot in free-draining soil in full sun. It works well in gravel gardens. If you wish, you can trim back any damaged leaves in spring to maintain a neat appearance.
