Athyrium niponicum var. pictum ('Japanese Painted Fern') is the most colourful of the hardy ferns. Each triangular frond has a silver and grey tinge to the foliage, so the whole plant shimmers in shade. The exotic East Asian cousin of the native Lady Fern, it was named Perennial Plant of the Year in 2004.
