Key features

Dryopteris affinis (Scaly Male Fern)

A native fern, known as scaly male fern or golden shield fern, which thrives in the humid, oceanic climate of the British Isles, this plant is found abundantly in woodlands, hedge banks, open hillsides, and heaths. It can also work well in many gardens.

This is a large fern growing to around 1 or 1.5m tall, and around 1m wide. New growth is a lighter green, with fronds becoming darker as they age. The stems are covered with golden scales.

Versatile and useful in a range of locations, scaly male fern can cope with full sun as long as sufficient water is available, and can also cope with dry shade as long as it is mulched well.
