Key features

Dryopteris erythrosora (Copper Shield Fern)

Copper shield fern, also known as autumn fern, can be a good choice for challenging shaded spots, though with sufficient moisture this is a fern that can also be grown in full sun.

This fern is unfussy when it comes to soil type, copes well at a range of light levels, even deep shade, and is fully hardy as long as it is placed in a sheltered position.

This is a low-maintenance choice which does not require much care, and which offers attractive foliage that emerges a coppery colour, fading to green as it matures.
