Key features

Dryopteris filix-mas (Male Fern)

Male fern is a common fern found throughout the British Isles and much of the temperate Northern Hemisphere. Lushy green, and deciduous, it can grow to a little over a metre tall and around a metre wide.

This fern naturally grows as the understory in woodland areas, or in other damp and shaded locations, in moist but free draining or poorly draining soil conditions. It does best in full or partial shade, though can also grow in sunnier spots with sufficient water and a good layer of mulch.

A good native choice for a wildlife-friendly garden, it can provide shelter and a food source for diverse garden wildlife.
