It is a striking perennial with blue flower heads held on tall stems and blooms throughout the summer months.

Echinops ritro (Globe Thistle)

The globe thistle is a bold and architectural perennial that is valued for its perfectly rounded, steel-blue flower heads. The distinctive blooms are carried on tall, upright stems above spiny, deeply cut greyish-green foliage, creating both structure and contrast in the garden.

This is a good choice for an easy and low-maintenance garden, as long as you can provide this plant with the full sun and well-drained soil that it requires. It is hardy, and tolerant of drought once established.

The flowers are very attractive to bees and other pollinators while the globe thistle is in flower, between midsummer and early autumn. At 90 to 120 in height, this is a striking addition to gravel gardens, or prairie planting schemes.
