Berberis thunbergii f. atropurpurea 'Atropurpurea Nana' is a condensed deciduous shrub with small purple leaves on thin bristly stems. Pale yellow flowers open in April and May, followed by red berries in autumn.

Berberis thunb. 'Atrop. Nana' (Japanese Barberry 'Atropurpurea Nana')

This Barberry variety is a short one, maxing out at no more than 1m in height.

This makes it a useful addition to the front of pathway and border edges - leaving room for more showy plants in the back.

The leaf colour of 'Atropurpurea Nana' is strongest in full sun. The foliage bears a deep burgundy colour through summer before turning a shade of brighter red in the autumn.

Susceptibilities include aphids and berberis sawfly, with powdery mildew sometimes an issue in congested planting.
