Key features

Galium odoratum (Sweet Woodruff)

Sweet woodruff, which has a number of traditional edible uses in moderation, is a native woodland species that can also be a great addition to gardens, bringing in pollinators in the spring.

This mat-forming perennial has fresh, green foliage and small, white flowers. When crushed or dried the leaves emit a sweet, hay-like fragrance.

Growing to around 20cm in height, it spreads steadily to form effective groundcover, thriving in moist, humus-rich soil in partial to full shade. It works well in a naturalistic setting in a woodland garden, between pavers in a shady spot, or at the front of a border.
