Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola' (Golden Japanese Forest Grass)

Golden Japanese forest grass has a golden hue, creating groundcover or forming neat clumps under trees or in a range of other garden locations. Its flowers are inconspicuous, but the foliage provides plenty of interest - especially in autumn and into winter when it can take on a reddish tint.

Like the species from which this cultivar is derived, golden hakonechloa works well in a range of soils, though it cannot tolerate deeper shade like the green-foliaged version.

Hardy and suited even to exposed locations, this grass is perfect as an understory for deciduous trees, or for front of border planting.
