Key features

Salvia off. Purpurascens (Purple Sage)

Salvia officinalis 'Purpurascens' (Purple Sage) is a decorative form of the common culinary herb with richly coloured purple-flushed foliage and aromatic leaves. In early summer, spikes of soft lilac flowers appear, attracting bees and adding seasonal interest.

At around 60cm in height, it forms a compact, shrubby mound that works very well in among other herbs in a herb garden, in a gravel garden, or in sunny borders. the foliage retains its colour well, potentially providing year-round texture and contrast.

Best grown in a well drained soil in full sun, it prefers a sheltered position and dislikes winter wet. Ensure good drainage whether growing in a container or in the ground, and trim lightly (or harvest) after flowering to encourage fresh growth.
