Sanguisorba officinalis 'Tanna' is a cultivar of great burnet, a herb which has a cucumber-like or slightly spicy flavour. It is also ornamental, offering deep crimson, bottlebrush flower heads on tender stems from midsummer to autumn.

Sanguisorba off. 'Tanna' (Great Burnet 'Tanna')

Sanguisorba officinalis 'Tanna' has small, rounded, deep crimson flower heads carried on wiry stems. Blooming from June into autumn, it provides long-lasting colour and a light, airy presence in mixed 'edimental' (edible and ornamental) borders.

Growing around 60 to 90cm tall, the grey-green foliage creates an attractive base for the distinctive blooms. Young leaves and flowers are edible and are excellent additions to a summer salad.

Best grown in a fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade, this is a plant that thrives where there is consistent moisture. Leave the faded stems over winter for wildlife shelter, then cut back in early spring.
