Key features

Verbena bonariensis (Purple Top)

Verbena bonariensis, sometimes called purple top, is a tall and eye-catching perennial, very popular with gardeners for its purple flowers, its erect habit, and its later season blooming period. It is perfect for maintaining pollinator presence in a wildlife-friendly garden.

Around 1.2 to 1.5m tall, it forms loose clumps with minimal foliage along the stems, allowing other plants to shine beneath. This is an attractive ornamental, as well as drawing in lots of bees, butterflies and other insects.

Tolerant of dry conditions once established, this plant does best in a full sun location, with a free-draining soil. Leave the seed head in place over winter for wildlife and further visual appeal, then cut back in spring for fresh, vigorous growth.
